Tie Dye Life PDF Print E-mail
6 am: We start early because this is no ordinary tee! The process takes over a day and a half from start to finish!  The hand-crafted design is one of a kind and the work is well worth the creative flair poured into each garment. Each shirt must be washed and scoured to remove any chemicals and additives in the fiber. This step is important as the cotton must be free from all additives accept to the dye that is soon to be applied.

7 am: Next the shirts are soaked in an alkaline solution that reacts with the dye to form an actual bond with the fibers. This insures washability that lasts for the life of the garment.

8 am: Now each garment is tied by hand. No machines, no automation just 100% pure elbow grease. Often imitated, never duplicated, the one of a kind uniqueness begins to materialize with this step. The type of pattern that the shirt is tied into will result in different looks or styles when the shirt is dyed.

9 am: Here is where the rubber meets the road. Dye is applied to the tied garment and reacts with the alkaline solution to form a bond weaving into the fiber, hence the name fiber reactive dye. Known for its durability, colorfastness, and ability to last the life of the garment, the additional cost in dyestuff (about 5x that of inferior materials) is money well spent.

The garment is all hand dyed without the use of machines or equipment of any type.  This hand-crafted approach is what insures the final product will have its one of a kind uniqueness.  While patterns are able to be duplicated, each tee is unique in exact color mix and style variations.  After the shirt is dyed it must sit a full 24hours to react with the fibers and Insure full color  fastness.

24 hours later....
The shirts are washed in small batches to exhaust all the dyes out.  Larger Industrial washers are not effective since the liquid ratio (amount of water to dye) is not high enough to get the job done.  After they are washed to clear water (about 10 to 12 cycles) they are dried in gas dryers.  This gives the end user a true prewashed and preshrunk garment.  Boxing the garments and sending them out is all that is left to do in this truly artisan process!
